DIRECTORS IN TYA – An International Exchange
20-27 June 2021 in Braunschweig (Germany)

Theatre for young audiences (TYA) needs professionals and ASSITEJ Germany is proud to host DIRECTORS IN TYA – An International Exchange. Since 1976, this exchange, known
globally also as the “International Directors’ Seminar” takes place every other year. It addresses directors as independent artists in the field of TYA. It is about learning from each other and about individuals from all over the world creating and contributing to a global artistic network.

Every ASSITEJ center and ASSITEJ network nominates one director for participation in the exchange. ASSITEJ Germany and the host theatre will then select 20 participants from all over the world and 5 participants from German speaking countries.
In 2021 DIRECTORS IN TYA – An International Exchange will take place from June 20-27th 2021 at Junges! Staatstheater Braunschweig (Young State Theatre, Braunschweig) (https://staatstheater-braunschweig.de/jungesstaatstheater/).

In 2021 the idea of “Planet B” will be the starting point of our work:

As humans we make plans and if one plan does not turn out, we come up with another, an alternative, a Plan B. Young people all over the world have recently confronted adults – parents, politicians, business leaders and artists – with a simple truth “There is no Planet B”.

As humans we live on one planet, the earth, and, for as long as we can remember, have wondered about other planets and other species or whether we could also live elsewhere in the universe. There have been excursions to the Moon and to Mars and many stories play with the idea of coming from outer space or moving to a new world. But is there a Planet B? And if there was, what would it mean?

Today’s young people ask all of us to reconsider our choices. We need to question thoughtless consumption and the unequal distribution of limited resources. We need to make new plans for a better future on our Planet A.

We are confronted with universal questions of justice, responsibility and freedom. These questions concern our audiences of all generations as much as they concern us as artists
and theatre makers.

We will welcome all participants to bring their ideas and experience and enter into an exchange on how these discussions inspire them in their TYA practice. The participants will work in small groups which will allow for a multitude of ideas and perspectives as well as directing approaches to be developed and tested by a diverse group of participants.

Theatre performances by the host theatre and other companies in Braunschweig as well as leisure activities will complete the week’s schedule. We are looking forward to an inspiring exchange!

DIRECTORS IN TYA – An International Exchange wishes to address directors of children’s and young people’s theatre who have recently given new impulses and set new standards. If you wish to find out more about colleagues from your country who have already participated in this exchange or find out more about participants of the past, you will find a list of all participants here:
